Tom has been married for thirty-eight years to Dr. Angela S. Finn, Ph.D., a recently retired educator in the city of Dalton Public School System. During the administration of former Governor, Roy Barnes, 1998-2002, Dr. Finn was appointed to and served on both the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and the Governor’s Education Reform Commission, chairing the Curriculum Committee which oversaw curriculum development for public schools and technical schools. Dr. Finn was also selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (“NASA”) as an educational advisor and served in that capacity from 2009-2012. Dr. Finn’s widely regarded expertise is in the field of identification and education of high achieving Hispanic and other minority females; two of which also attained the terminal Ph.D. degree and are now professors in the departments of education in two major universities.
In January 2019, Tom and Angela founded and co-manage Afghanistan Soldiers Assistance Project (“ASAP”), a not-for-profit organization which raises funds to purchase and ship various supplies, tools, clothing and gear to members of 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Georgia National Guard which deployed to Afghanistan in December, 2018. That Project is on-going and will continue until the soldiers return from Afghanistan.
Tom and Angela have two children, a daughter, Katherine, 35, who earned a B.S. degree in 2005 from Furman University in Greenville, SC. Kate earned her Master’s in Science in May, 2008, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then was selected to perform a medical internship in Denmark. Upon completion of that internship, Kate returned to the United States, worked for Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, until 2010 when she relocated to Colorado and worked for the University of Colorado Medical Center, Anschutz Campus, in Aurora. She now resides in Dayton, Ohio, with her husband, Air Force Captain Wesley Pippenger, who is stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base after having attended the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland.
Tom and Angela’s son, Michael, 29, is a 2013 graduate of the University of North Georgia, The Military College of Georgia, where he was a member for four years of the Corps of Cadets and one of thirty-six entering freshmen selected for the Honors Program. Michael was also one of sixteen freshmen entering University of North Georgia selected to participate in that University’s Department of Defense Strategic Languages Initiative inaugural Mandarin Chinese Immersion Program and then was selected to attend Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.
Michael graduated with honors in 2007 from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia. While a cadet, Michael was awarded the 2006-2007 academic year Distinguished Cadet Citation by the Association of Military Colleges and Military Schools of the United States (AMCSUS). Michael has been employed in Information Technology, but is now pursuing graduate-level training in the field of Cyber Security.
