Tom has been married for thirty-five years to Dr. Angela S. Finn, Ph.D., a recently retired educator in the city of Dalton Public School System. During the administration of former Governor, Roy Barnes, 1998-2002, Dr. Finn was appointed to and served on both the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and the Governor’s Education Reform Commission, chairing the committee which oversaw curriculum for public schools and technical schools. She was also selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (“NASA”) as an educational advisor and served in that capacity from 2009-2012. Dr. Finn’s widely regarded expertise is in the field of identification of and education of high achieving Hispanic and other minority females; two of which also obtained the terminal Ph.D. degree and are now professors in the departments of education in two major universities.


Tom and Angela have two children, a daughter, Katherine, 33, a 2005 graduate of Furman University. She earned her Master’s in Science in May, 2008, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then was selected to perform a medical internship in Denmark. Upon her completion of that internship, Kate returned to the United States, and worked for Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, until 2010 when she relocated to Colorado and worked for the University of Colorado Medical Center, Anschutz Campus, in Aurora. She now resides with her husband, Air Force Captain Wesley Pippenger, who is a student at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland.


Tom and Angela’s son, Michael, 27, is a 2013 graduate of the University of North Georgia, The Military College of Georgia, where he was a member for four years of the Corps of Cadets and one of thirty-six entering freshmen selected for the Honors Program. Michael was also one of sixteen entering University of North Georgia selected to participate in that University’s inaugural Mandarin Chinese Immersion Program of the Dept. of Defense Strategic Languages Initiative and then was selected to attend Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. Michael graduated in 2007 with honors from Riverside Military Academy, in Gainesville, Georgia, and was awarded the 2006-2007 academic year Distinguished Cadet Citation by the Association of Military Colleges and Military Schools of the United States (AMCSUS). Michael is now employed as a Field Engineer by Atos which provides information technology services to Volkswagen in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Assembly Plant
